Crossplay Guide for Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Scroll Prev Top Next More

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet do not support crossplay in the traditional sense, as they are exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. However, they do allow for multiplayer interaction between players using the same platform. Here's how it works:

Multiplayer Features

Platform Exclusivity: Both games are only available on the Nintendo Switch, so crossplay between different platforms like PlayStation or Xbox is not possible.

Co-op Multiplayer: You can play with up to three other players in co-op mode. This includes exploring the game world, battling, trading Pokémon, and participating in Tera Raid Battles.

Union Circle: This is the feature that allows you to play in multiplayer:

Access: Use the Poké Portal (by pressing the X button) to enter the Union Circle. Here, you can host or join sessions with friends.

Activities: You can catch Pokémon together, battle, trade, and engage in Tera Raid Battles.

Version Exclusives: You can catch version-exclusive Pokémon by playing with someone who has the opposite version of the game. These Pokémon will appear around players based on their game version.

How to Play Multiplayer

Nintendo Switch Online Subscription: You need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to engage in online multiplayer activities like trading or battling.

Initiate Multiplayer:

Pause the game and select the Union Circle from the menu.

You can either host a session or join one by entering a link code provided by your friends.

Activities in Multiplayer:

Explore: Wander around Paldea together, catch Pokémon, and take selfies.

Battle: Engage in battles or Tera Raid Battles where everyone can attack simultaneously.

Trade: You can trade Pokémon directly with friends in your session.

Limitations

No Cross-Progression: There's no feature for cross-progression between Scarlet and Violet if you switch games.

Game Progress: Progress in the story (like defeating gyms or Titan Pokémon) does not count for players other than the host. You'll need to do these in your own game to advance.

Item Collection: Items picked up by one player do not affect the inventory of others in the session.

Additional Information

Local Play vs. Online: Local wireless and online play are both supported, but you'll need to connect to the internet for online features.

Friend Interaction: You can see what your friends are doing (like catching Pokémon or battling) through the Poké Portal's Friends section.

While "crossplay" isn't applicable since the games are Switch-exclusive, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet offer robust multiplayer options for players on the same platform, enhancing the social aspect of the Pokémon experience. Players looking to play with friends should ensure they're all on Nintendo Switch and have a Switch Online subscription for the fullest multiplayer experience.
